It's Football Friday for me and most everyone else in West Tennessee. Tonight is the first regular season game for all the high school teams. My daughter Carrie Beth is a cheerleader for the Crockett County Cavaliers. It seems like only yesterday that this beautiful young lady was this cute little pig-tailed girl. We'll be in our usual seats on the 50-yard line watching the action on the field and on the sidelines. Go Cavaliers!!

Debra Simpson sent a photo of her granddaughter Libby in her cute Paulie romper by Children's Corner. Debra used lime and hot pink micro checks and embroidered Libby's name with her sewing machine. It looks like Libby is pleased with it. Good job, Debra.

Sarah Minton sent photos of her grandsons Joshua and Jordan in their Sailor Rompers. The pattern is #117 Front Button Romper from Creations by Miche. What a fine looking family!

Kit Today's blog kit is a Collars, Etc. Mary Jane jumper made from our fun elephant-printed twill. Mary Jane is easy to smock because there's only room for one figure, so this will work up quickly. Smock a red elephant on a white insert and layer the jumper over a white blouse with black mini micro check piping. This will make a great fall outfit. Are you paying attention Alabama fans? The kit will fit up to size 5 and includes jumper, lining and blouse fabrics, smocking plate, DMC floss, piping, thread and buttons. The price of the kit is $48.00, and the pattern is $12.00. Call or e-mail to order this quick, fun-to-wear kit.

We hope you have a great Labor Day. Enjoy the day off if you can.

We've certainly had excitement around here this morning! Carol and I had been hearing something knock against the back wall of our building for a while, but we had not gone out to investigate. Then a man came in all hot and out of breath and asked to use the phone. He was an animal control officer, and he told us that they had corralled an emu in our little fenced-in back lot. It seems the emu was one that someone had abandoned, and it had been spotted roaming around the county for the last few days. When we went outside to investigate, we found police officers, animal control personnel and even the local newspaper editor in our backyard standing over a large bird that they had subdued. It was not harmed-the blanket over its head is to keep it from getting scared of us. The plan is to try to get the emu a home at a local safari park. What a day! There's surely never a dull moment around here.

We have photos to share from Anita Roy and Kelli Fox. Anita's granddaughter Julia is showing off her fall bishop smocked with pumpkins. Very cute. You may remember Kelli's story about smocking a purple dress for her daughter Gates' first day of school. However, Gates really wanted to start school in a pink dress with puffy sleeves, and, being a good mother, Kelli was happy to oblige. As you can see from the photo, it was worth it all to get a kiss from a cutie like Gates.

Every week we get more new patterns and fabrics. Ginger Snaps Designs has a new pattern, Carrington's Dropwaist Dress and Jumper. It is available in sizes 4-8, and has lots of design possibilities. We also have three new Verona lawn prints. We've been asking our sales rep for new Verona prints for a while, and he finally came through for us. Look for the new pattern and fabric to be added to our catalog in the next day or so. The new Children's Corner Idea Book has also been very popular.

Kit Our blog kit today features some of that great new printed corduroy from Heirloom Imports. We love the texture of this Genevieve corduroy and think it would make a cozy Sam and Samantha Romper and coordinating Robin's Little Jacket, both by Children's Corner. The aqua micro stripe is a perfect choice for lining the overalls and jacket and for binding the jacket. Combined with a turtleneck in one of the coordinating colors, this will be an outfit that will get lots of wear all through the fall and winter. Of course, the jacket can be paired with lots of other things as well. Let your imagination run wild. The kit will include garment and lining fabrics, buttons and thread. Size 6 months to 3 is $62.00, and size 4 to 6 is $81.00. The patterns, if needed, are $12.00 each. Call or e-mail to order this super kit.

Thankfully, we're getting a little relief from the scorching temperatures, and there's a chance we could get some much-needed rain tonight.

We hope you're having a great week. Let us hear from you.

What's new? A lot! We have three new patterns by the Old Fashioned Baby. One is a reprint of the popular Smocked Baby Clothes. Also new is Ideas from Children's Corner by Lezette Thomason. It has lots of fresh ideas to spark up your favorite Children's corner patterns. And, we have two new autumn-y Liberty prints.

Kelli Fox sent some new photos of her latest projects. One is a smocked baby daygown she plans to give as a gift for a winter baby. She made it out of our cashmere cotton. This is a great idea for babies born in the winter months or outside of the deep south. Kelli's other finished project is a bishop for Gates. You probably remember the girls jumping rope smocking plate from Creative Needle a couple of years back. Kelli tweaked the colors and smocked it on indigo Teeny Tiny Satin Pique.

Cissie Wellons also sent a photo of her latest project-a yoke dress for granddaughter Eliza's first day of kindergarten. Cissie used Collars, Etc.'s Yoke Dress pattern, and the collar is also from Collars, Etc. She embellished the collar with cast-on flowers. The fabric is Tess Lawn. It's just beautiful, Cissie.

I'm sorry there's no blog kit today. I was busy getting all the new things put up on the website, and I just ran out of time. I promise to come up with something great for Monday's blog.

Have a great weekend and let us hear from you.

Beverley Sheldrick's class finished on Saturday, and I think everyone enjoyed it very much. Beverley has such beautiful things. Now we're looking forward to workshops with Gail Doane in November and January, Lillie McAnge in April, and Claudia Newton in June. Call or e-mail for details. These teachers are very popular, and the classes have already started filling.

We had a nice visit from Penny McKinnie last week. Penny says she enjoys our blog and checks for a new one every day. We hope all of you enjoy it as well. Be sure to check our New Arrivals page to see the latest ideas we have for you. Also, we have added several new patterns from Kwik Sew and Maja's Heirlooms and new fabrics on the pima cotton, floral and printed lawn pages.

Sea Island Knits Our friend Mary Ann Jeffers loves to make baby gowns and blankets out of our Sea Island knits. This wonderfully soft knit is available in a variety of solids and prints, and Mary Ann says that it sews beautifully. She uses a zig-zag stitch for the seams. Hems, necklines and cuffs can be finished with a zig-zag or decorative stitch. We don't think you necessarily have to use a pattern made specifically for knits. Several of the Gingersnaps daygowns and Old Fashioned Baby patterns would work, as well as several of the Kwik Sew patterns. Of course, Children's Corner's Bunny's Knit Nightie is a great one to try.

Kit Today's blog kit features one of our new Tiffany lawns from Spechler-Vogel. These new 60" wide lawns are very nice quality, and the small scale is perfect for little ones. Of course, a bishop would be sweet, but we also like Children's Corner Maggie or the Toddler Smocked Apron from Collars, Etc. The kit will include enough fabric to complete any of these garments, as well as DMC floss and peppermint mini micro check piping. Size 6-18 months is $32.00, and the 2-4 size is $40.00. Any of the patterns can be added on for $12.00.

Don't forget to send us some photos of your fall sewing. We'd love to share them with all our readers.

Have a great day!

Beverley Sheldrick's class is in full swing, and everyone is having a wonderful time. Beverley is just as lovely as her accent. She will definitely be coming back for a return engagement. Stay tuned for more information.

Martha Seagle and her husband stopped by yesterday on their way back to Chattanooga from Albuquerque. It was an enjoyable experience for her, and her husband was so patient. He just sat in a corner and read his book until she was done with her shopping. We encourage folks to stop in if their travels take them close to us. We are a short distance from both Interstate 40 and Interstate 55-an easy trip from Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis or Little Rock. Like Martha, you will be pleasantly surprised by our extensive selection of fabrics and laces; and we promise that you will be welcomed warmly.

It's never too early to start thinking about Christmas sewing. The sooner you get your outfits done, the more they'll get worn. For a quick, easy project, we have this adorable teddy bear tapestry ribbon. We like the black ribbon on the black mini micro check and the red ribbon on the red Pima tattersall. It could be used on a Children's Corner Jeffrey, Paulie or Morgan or Creative Needle's Allan's Bubble or Easy Sunsuit. For a dressier look for little boys, you could use it on a Children's Corner David or Wright instead of smocking. For a little one, we like Chery Williams' Baby Romper and Jumpsuit.

Kit kit Kit Today's blog kits use the same Liberty pattern in three different color ways. All use the Jackson pattern by Children's Corner and one of our Liberty feelers for the collar and cuffs. Since we still have warm weather into October here, this would be a great outfit for school or play. For cooler weather, the pants could be lengthened to Capri or long length and a contrast cuff added. Kit #1 uses aqua pinpoint and a dusty rose piping. Kit #2 uses Wedgwood micro check and a tangerine piping. Kit #3 uses red corduroy and purple piping for an eye-catching combination. The kits include fabrics, piping, thread and buttons and will fit up to size 4. Each kit is $30.00, and the pattern is $12.00. Call or e-mail to reserve your selection.

Don't forget to let us hear from you soon. Have a great day.

The west Tennessee weather forecast for this week goes like this: hot, very hot, hot and humid, unbearably hot and sticky. We've had a week of triple-digit temperatures with no relief in sight. I sure am thankful for air conditioning.

Beverley Sheldrick arrives today, and the class starts tomorrow. We'll try to post some photos of the class participants and their lovely projects on the next blog.

Last week's blog kit was one of our most popular yet. In fact, we sold all three of them and folks are still asking for them. So, today's blog kits will be very similar. Either Children's Corner Carol or Jenni Leigh would be great for a corduroy dress with a Liberty collar and cuffs. Both the navy combination and the teal combination are perfect for fall, and we have chosen just the right piping for each. Each kit will fit up to a size 4 and includes fabrics, thread and buttons. The price for the kit is $33.00, and the patterns are $12.00 each. If you're still regretting missing last week's kits, don't delay, because these will go fast, too.

Our other blog kit has been a store sample here, but we think it's a great back to school outfit. Bessie from Children's Corner is one of my favorite patterns, and who says you have to smock the front and back the same? The front of this blue end-on-end dress is smocked with Little Memories' Duck Crossing, and the back is smocked with Teacher's Pets, also from Little Memories. It looks good coming and going. The slicker yellow piping gives it an unexpected jolt of color. The kit includes fabric, plates, floss, piping, thread and buttons. Size 1-4 is $50.00, and size 5-8 is $55.00. The pattern is $12.00.

Don't forget to keep sending us photos. We love hearing from you.

Have a great day!

Beverley Sheldrick's class is right around the corner. We are all anxious to meet Beverley and see the wonderful project she is teaching. The kits are absolutely gorgeous. Gail Doane's classes in November and January are both nearly full. Gail has created two brand new projects for these classes. If you are interested in taking one of these excellent classes, don't hesitate to sign up because we will have to stop registration when the classes are full. Call or e-mail us for additional details.

Today's blog kit is another multiple choice. We have taken three Liberty feelers and combined them with coordinating micro check fabrics for simple back to school dresses. Children's Corner Carol is a back-to-school favorite. View B with the sweet inverted pleat is a classic that you'll use over and over. Make the collar and cuffs out of the Liberty feeler and use contrasting solid piping for an eye-catching outfit. We are offering three color schemes: pink, blue or goldenrod. The blog kit will include fabrics, piping, buttons and thread for up to a size 4. The kit is a great value at $25.00, and the pattern add-on is $12.00. Call or e-mail with your color preference.

Congratulations to Sally at Farmhouse Fabrics and our local customer Cynthia Hook. Both ladies welcomed new grandsons last week.

Chris DuPuis is in our thoughts today. She recently had surgery, and we wish her a very speedy recovery.

Have a great weekend. Stay cool, and let us hear from you soon.

Wednesday, August 8, 2007
We hope you're staying as cool as possible. It was 100 degrees here yesterday and expected to stay that way through the weekend - dog days for sure.

We just received a new shipment of 60" micro checks in some yummy colors - peach, grape, sage, magenta and Kelly green. These will be wonderful coordinates for lots of the prints we have. Also, we received two beautiful new floral prints this week, and both of them are perfect for fall. We've also added three new Liberty prints.

Cathy Odom asked what we like to use for collars and cuffs and how we get them to keep their shape and not wrinkle after laundering. If you are making a white collar, we suggest linen for a dressier look or pique or pinpoint for a more casual look. For a colored collar and cuffs, you may not be able to find the perfect fabric in the perfect color, so you may have to sacrifice fabric quality to achieve the perfect color match. German interfacing has long been a favorite of ours, but we are sold out and have been unable to find a source to reorder it at a competitive price. Debbie Glenn of Love and Stitches does still have the German interfacing available for $11.50 per yard. You may contact her at www.loveandstitches.com or (803) 642-1852. We are experimenting with other types of interfacing and will let you know if we find one that we think you'll like. Thanks, Cathy, for a great question. If any of you have questions or comments, be sure to contact us. We'll try to address them in the blog.

The new Mary Jane pattern from Collars, Etc. continues to sell well. This is a great basic jumper and can be used many different ways. It's a good place for a small amount of smocking (think less time!) or machine embroidery. We have corduroy in lots of great colors, so why not crank out a few of these for school.

Kit Today's blog kits are perfect when you want something quick and easy. Kit #1 has the very last of a great pink and yellow print pique teamed up with yellow micro check. Kwik Sew #3035 would be so sweet made up as a pique top lined with yellow micro check with micro check ruffle and panties. Sew the darker pink buttons on with yellow thread for a surprise detail. The $25 kit will fit up to size 18 months and includes fabrics, thread and buttons. The pattern can be added for an additional $8.50.

Kit Kit #2 is a cool aqua candy cord stripe jumper using Kitty by Children's Corner. Instead of a self-ruffle, we like a sweet eyelet ruffle. The Hunca Munca buttons add just the right element of fun. The kit includes jumper and lining fabrics, eyelet, thread and buttons. It is $$28.00 and will fit sizes 1-6. The pattern is an additional $12.00.

Have a great day, try to stay cool, and let us hear from you.

We had a lovely visit today from Janice Cates of Nashville. She brought a photo of her granddaughter GiGi wearing the Belle Meade dress that Janice made her. Doesn't she look like a little angel?

Emily Brown sent this photo of Katibeth in her "First Day of School" outfit. Grandmother Margie used Kay Guiles' Amy pattern and smocked it with Apple Academy from Little Memories. Katibeth gets an A+ for her outfit and for her smile.

Beverley Sheldrick's class is fast approaching. We've got some people coming here for the first time, so we're really looking forward to this workshop.

Kit Our blog kits today use some more of those wonderful Liberty feelers we like so much and combines them with our great Fabric Finders corduroy. The first kit is for a Robin's Jacket by Children's Corner. The light periwinkle corduroy jacket is lined with micro check, and the Liberty print is used for the collar and sleeve cuffs. The jacket could also be bound in the corduroy, or you could make pockets. The $35.00 kit will fit up to a size 8 and includes corduroy, micro check for lining, Liberty feeler, thread and buttons. If you like, you could also purchase additional corduroy for a skort or pants. You would probably have enough Liberty to bind the skort or make pants cuffs. Wouldn't that look fabulous!

Kit The second blog kit uses my favorite milk chocolate corduroy for a Children's Corner Lucy. The Liberty feeler is big enough to make the ruffle and pockets. The kit includes corduroy, mini micro check for lining, Liberty feeler, thread and buttons. Size 1-4 is $32.00, and size 5-8 is $38.00. Another option would be to shorten the Lucy to a top and make some brown corduroy pants with a Liberty ruffle. This will require different amounts of fabric, so call us and we'll figure it for you.

To order any of our blog kits, call our toll-free number, 877-269-9419. Some of our blog kits from previous weeks are still available. Call for more information.

It's been a busy week here, but we hope to get more of our new inventory posted next week. Keep checking the website. We truly appreciate your business. Let us hear from you soon.

Have a great day!

It's another scorcher here today. What would we complain about if we didn't have extreme weather?

Since I'm writing this from home today, I can't put together a blog kit, so I'll just tell you about some great new things that we have. I love all of the new Tiffany printed Lawns from Spechler-Vogel. These are very nice quality 60" wide fabrics. My favorites are Tiffany #3 and Tiffany #30. Any of them would make a lovely bishop or Collars, Etc. Tuck Dress or Toddler Smocked Apron. I would also like to see someone combine the two red coordinating prints. Have you got any ideas?

We also just received some new 60" coordinating stripe and check fabrics from Spechler-Vogel in one of my favorite new color schemes, pink and white with just a touch of red. They will be up on the website very soon. Another favorite this year is the milk chocolate corduroy. It is the yummiest shade of brown.

Are you well into your fall sewing yet? I don't get to do much seasonal sewing now that my daughter is 17. Now most of my personal sewing consists of baby gifts. Right now I am working on a pink Swiss voile bishop. Swiss Voile is one of my very favorite fabrics because it doesn't wrinkle nearly as badly as most of the Swiss batistes. Also, it smocks beautifully and comes in a rainbow of gorgeous colors.

Since I don't have a blog kit to share with you, I will share photos of my "babies". We have two dogs in the Branch family, a black lab named Elvis, and a Belgian Malinois named Bear. Elvis is a gentle giant who always accompanies me on my morning walks, although he is quite camera shy. Bear is a bomb/drug sniffing dog whose mother once worked for the Secret Service. (The only sniffing Bear does, however, is for cheeseburgers.) For some reason, our house has been a magnet for stray dogs this summer. This one is the second stray to try to make her home with us in as many months. I think we will keep this one. I have named her Brownie after a childhood dog. I don't know what kind of dog she is, but she is very loving and has made it her business to protect my back doorstep.

Speaking of dogs, we want to wish Ann Henderson's dog, Minnie, a speedy recovery from the rattlesnake bite she sustained last week.

Have a great day and let us hear from you soon.

I can't believe that it's already time for the kids to go back to school. School started here in Dyersburg today. Where did the summer go?

It seems like we get something new in here every day! Today we received a big box of fabric, and we hope to have it up on the website soon. The new Mary Jane pattern from Collars, Etc. has been very popular. We've also sold a ton of monkey face buttons as seen on the cover of the July/August Creative Needle. This has been one of our most popular Creative Needle kits. To order this or any of their other kits, go to www.creativeneedle.com.

Vicky DeReign sent a photo of her granddaughters wearing their madras skirts and cropped tops. She has some budding models on her hands. Vicky made the skirts using Kwik Sew pattern #3169 and five different blue plaid fabrics. We really like the Kwik Sew patterns, and we ordered more today. Look for these on the website soon.

Kelli Fox sent a photo of a bishop she just finished for Gates. Don't you wish you could get as much done as Kelli.

You only have a few more days to take advantage of our sale. See last week's blogs for all the details. We still have lots of great fabrics at fantastic prices, and the more you buy the more you save, so stock up. The sale ends Monday at midnight, so call soon to place your order.

Today's blog kit will inspire you to get that fall sewing started. We love the unusual color combination in this lime and hot pink printed corduroy. This would be a great way to try out that new Mary Jane pattern from Collars, Etc. The cotton candy pink pinpoint oxford coordinates perfectly for lining and for a blouse and smocked insert if desired. Or, make it easy on yourself and just make the plain version. The $35.00 kit includes jumper and lining fabric, thread and buttons. It will fit up to a size 5. You can purchase additional fabric for the blouse if you like.

Have a great weekend, and let us hear from you soon.

The new Mary Jane Jumpers pattern from Collars, Etc. has arrived. We have shipped our advance orders, and we still have plenty in stock. Call us to order the pattern that everyone has been waiting for. This would make a great back to school outfit. It can be smocked quickly, and it's a perfect place to showcase your hand or machine embroidery. We also like the fact that it can be worn with or without a blouse - we typically have hot weather on into October here.

Clarissa Neiding sent a photo of her daughter Anastasia wearing a ladybug Abbie that she purchased as one of our kits. Didn't she do a wonderful job! Anastasia looks so happy with her new outfit.

Kelli Fox just thought she was ready for Gates' first day of school. Kelli had the lavender pique smocked dress all done, but Gates has now decided that pink is the color she wants to wear to start pre-school. So Kelli is making a pink dress now.

Kit We have a great blog kit today. The new milk chocolate corduroy would make the most beautiful Children's Corner Libby with sashes made from the Jenny's Ribbons Liberty. Add a pink pinpoint blouse piped in the Liberty Print, and you have a fashionable fall ensemble sure to please any young lady. The kit will include fabrics for the jumper, sashes and blouse and coordinating thread and buttons. Size 1-4 kit is $60.00, and the size 5-8 kit is $68.00.

The Libby pattern does not have a blouse with it, but several other Children's Corner patterns have blouses: Mary De, Amy and Louise to name a few. We also have a great new blouse pattern, Mary Hayden's Blouse by Ginger Snaps Designs. This pattern has several collar and sleeve variations, and sizes 2-8 are all included.

We are still seeing brown everywhere in ready-to-wear this fall, and we have lots of brown fabrics to inspire you. One of my favorites is the new Zara Chocolate printed corduroy. It coordinates beautifully with the aqua, coral and lime micro checks. In addition to the new milk chocolate corduroy, we have brown mini micro check, brown micro stripe and brown seersucker. We also have a great new plaid twill (FF383) in brown, red and hunter green.

Don't forget about our big sale going on now. See last week's blogs for all the details. Some of the fabrics have already sold out, so call to make sure your selection is available. There are still lots of great bargains to be had, so don't miss out.

Have a great day and let us hear from you soon.

Today we had a visit from Vicky DeReign and her daughter Danelle and granddaughters Chloe and Ellen. Vicky and Danelle fell in love with the Liberty Wiltshire fabric and we were delighted to help them plan Christmas outfits for the girls. We discovered that the Liberty fabric is simply stunning with our new red corduroy. For Chloe, Vicky chose a skirt and jacket out of the corduroy with a Liberty blouse. Ellen will have a jumper out of the corduroy and a blouse out of the Liberty. We can't wait to see photos.

After Vicky left, we kept on planning with the corduroy. It is the most gorgeous shade of red we have ever had! The closest DMC color number is 304. We came up with so many ideas for this fabric-it looks great with our new tartan pipings, especially the Logan tartan; and look how precious the little tartan Scottie dog buttons look with it. As popular as this color is this time of year, we recommend that you order early. You don't want to be disappointed at Christmas.

We received lots of new double-faced satin ribbon today. For a long time we have looked for a pink satin ribbon to match Bear Threads' Swiss fabrics. Sometimes their pinks are a little peach-y, but this ribbon matches the Swiss voile and the dotted Swiss perfectly. We also got several widths of the ribbon in a beautiful blue shade.

Mary Thorpe sent this photo of her precious grandson wearing an adorable "Will" jumpsuit by Collars, Etc. Mary is really enjoying sewing again.

SaleWe have added more fabrics to our sale. For details on the sale see the Monday, July 16 blog. We are extending the sale for one more week-until Monday, July 30.

As promised, we're using some more of our Liberty "Feelers" for our blog kits today. Kit #1 is perfect for that first crisp autumn day. The persimmon corduroy looks great with the feather-printed Liberty. How about making a dress-length Children's Corner Abbie and using the Liberty for the collar, cuffs and covered buttons? Wouldn't that be adorable! The kit will include corduroy, Liberty feeler, broadcloth for lining, piping, thread and covered button kit. The size 1-4 kit is $42.00, and the size 5-8 kit is $50.00.

Kit #2 will get you through those "dog days" of August. We suggest using Children's Corner Frannie for a quick-to-sew dress. The lavender and pink Pima check (PC 1038) would look great accented with a Liberty Nancy collar and ties. Couldn't get much cuter or easier than that! The $35.00 kit will include fabric (the dress is self-lined), Liberty feeler, thread, piping and a button, and will fit sizes 1-8.

Remember, to order any of the blog kits, you must call our toll-free number, 877-269-9419. These kits are sold on a first-come, first served basis.

Have a great weekend and let us hear from you soon.

Our new fabrics have arrived!! We have 5 new Liberty printed lawns, 4 new 60" wide printed feather wale corduroys from Heirloom Imports and 11 brand new prints from Spechler-Vogel. We are especially excited about these Spechler-Vogel prints. We have been after our Spechler rep for a long time to find us some new small-scale prints, and she came through in a big way. They are very good quality lawn fabrics, 60" wide and $17.50 each.

Don't forget about our big sale still going on! See Monday's blog for all the details. Remember, the more you buy the more you save, and this sale is good for a limited time only. There are some phenomenal bargains to be had, so hurry and place your order while the selection is good.

We're busy getting ready for Beverley Sheldrick's class next month. The kits arrived today, and they are spectacular. We still have a couple of spots left, so don't miss this rare opportunity to learn from one of the masters of silk ribbon embroidery.

Sarah Minton sent us a photo of her latest creation, a reproduction of "Morgan", Carol's Heirloom Legacy project in the November/December 2002 Creative Needle. She did an excellent job.

We have something exciting for our blog kits today. Recently we were able to purchase some Liberty "feelers". Sales reps use these feelers to show the fabrics to their customers. Most are discontinued prints, and most are about 13" x 29", but we have lots of big ideas for them. Today we'll share two ideas, but keep checking the blog because we have lots of the feelers, and when we get our new corduroy solids in later in the week we'll share even more.

For Kit #1 we suggest Children's Corner Adelaide. We like the blue/green Pima tartan for the dress and the "tic-tac-toe" Liberty print for the collar and cuffs. For an added design element, sew the mother-of-pearl buttons on with contrasting thread in an "x" design. This one-of-a-kind kit will fit up to size 6 and includes fabrics, thread and buttons. It is a steal at $45.00.

For Kit #2, we suggest a Children's Corner Kinsey (View C) made from the Pima tri-color check accented with the Liberty at the sleeves and pockets (View A). The kit will include fabrics, thread and buttons. Size 1-4 is $35.00, and size 5-8 is $42.00.

We hope you're enjoying your summer and that you're making time for sewing. Let us hear from you soon.

Have a great day!

This sale includes some great fabrics that we have held on to because we really like them; but now we have to make room for fabulous new fabrics scheduled to arrive next week.

Kit The blog kit today is a perfect project for easing back into fall sewing. We love the Kayla jumper by Bonnie Blue Designs because there are endless possibilities for the pockets. For example, how about using this whimsical turnip trim on top edge of the pockets on a jumper made from this blue windowpane check. Pair this with a white blouse with red piping or a red turtleneck, and you'll have one back to school outfit done in no time. The kit includes fabric (including self lining), trim and buttons. The size 1-3 kit is $30.00, and the size 4-6 kit is $36.00. The Kayla pattern is $12.00.

Keri Mecca's Dainty Underclothes pattern has been revised and is back in print in an expanded size range. It is now available in sizes 3-18 months or 2-10 years.

These adorable children are the grandchildren of our good friend and customer Linda Lindner. Several of you knew Linda either from classes here in Dyersburg or through Lyn Weeks' workshops in Naperville. Linda died in January and is greatly missed by her family and friends. Linda's daughter Jenny sent us this photo of Jonathan, Samuel and baby Benjamin.

Thanks for all the positive feedback we receive about our blog. We love hearing from you! Have a great week!

Since we are expecting lots of new fabrics in the upcoming weeks, we are doing some summer house cleaning around here. Be sure to check Saturday's blog for a BIG sale announcement. You won't want to miss out on this one.

Speaking of house cleaning, we have found a piece of Liberty that was kind of forgotten. All you lovers of Liberty will want to know about this one. It is 36 inches wide and $22.50 per yard, so you know it hasn't been available for a while since Liberty is now 56 inches wide and quite a bit more expensive.

Blog kit #1 today is multiple choice. We think this yellow Spanish dimity fabric would be a sweet Lyn Weeks' Frannie for back to school. Red piping on the white collar and pocket flaps will make it really stand out from the crowd. For the accent buttons on the pockets, we will include a pair of buttons of your choice. The choices are butterfly, pinwheel, rooster, sunshine or stick figures. Any of them would be adorable. The kit includes fabric for the dress and collar, piping, buttons for the back and accent buttons. It is available up to a size 8, and the cost is $22.00. The pattern add-on is Fannie by Especially For You.

Blog kit #2 uses the very last of a wonderful Verona print. We think this would make another great back to school dress using Children's Corner Lucy jumper. Accented with yellow piping and yellow "Frito" buttons, this one is sure to be a favorite. The kit will fit up to size 7 and includes dress and lining fabric, piping and buttons. It's a bargain at $40.00.

Call or e-mail us to order the Liberty or either of the blog kits mentioned above.

Don't forget about the classes we have coming up. Beverley Sheldrick's class in August is filling up fast, and Gail Doane's November class is full. Gail will return in January 2008, Lillie McAnge will be here in April 2008, and Claudia Newton will return in June 2008. For more information or to register for any of these schools, please call our toll-free number, 877-269-9419. We promise you'll enjoy yourself at our schools.

Please keep sending us photos of your finished projects. We love the feedback we get from you, and we love seeing your beautiful children and grandchildren.

Have a great day and let us hear from you soon.

West Tennessee's weather report is starting to sound like a broken record-hot and humid with afternoon showers. We still need rain, though, so we'll try not to complain too much.

We are expecting to receive the new Mary Jane pattern from Collars, Etc. very soon. If you would like to be put on our list to receive a copy as soon as we do, please call or e-mail us with your information. We'll make sure you get one as soon as we receive them.

Sarah Minton sent a photo of her granddaughter Sally in her birthday dress. I can tell that Sally really likes the idea of matching bloomers.

Kit The blog kit today features the last of the very popular pink Swiss voile check done up as Hannah's sundress with a white pique yoke and Swiss eyelet sleeve ruffles. The white yoke is the perfect spot for some embroidery, either hand or machine. The pattern includes a lovely embroidery design. The kit will fit up to a size 2 and includes fabrics, eyelet and buttons. It's a steal at $37.50, so be sure you order this one before it's gone. Remember, the blog kits can only be ordered by phone or e-mail.

We are still anxiously awaiting the arrival of the newest Creative Needle. Carol's Heirloom Legacy garment is fabulous as always, and Lynn and I both have submissions scheduled to appear.

Have a great day and let us hear from you soon.

It's a hot one here today. It makes me glad to be inside under the air conditioner with some sewing to work on.

We received some photos today from Meredith Hogue showing her latest projects. Ramey's pink heirloom Easter dress is truly a work of art. Emma-Duncan's Miranda play outfit with the smocked Lazy Hippo is almost as cute as she is. And, baby Ellie's pink Easter bishop with ecru tatting could not be sweeter. Meredith is a busy mother of four (brother Michael has outgrown us), but she makes time to sew for her girls. She is very creative, and we love helping her plan their special outfits.

I'm sorry there's no blog kit today-camera woes again-but we will have lots of new ideas and blog kits for you next week. We expect to be receiving new fall fabrics very soon, and that always gets our gears turning and our creative juices flowing. Watch for lots of new ideas in the coming weeks. It's not too early to be thinking fall. If you have a special garment you'd like us to help you plan, please give us a call. We are always ready to help.

Have a great weekend and let us hear from you soon.

We realize that summer is a very busy time for everyone, but you only have a couple of days left to take advantage of our fabulous summer sale. If you received our latest newsletter, you have all the details. If you didn't get the newsletter, details of the sale can be found on the Snippets page. Remember, your order must be placed before midnight CST on July 4 to receive the discount.

Donna Dvorshock and her daughter and granddaughter were here in the store over the weekend, and Donna's granddaughter did a lovely job modeling some of our store samples. The Liberty fabric shown is Mamie, and the smocking design is from an old AS&E. The hot pink dress is Perky on the kit page, and the black and white polka dot is Renee from the Children's Corner. Although Renee is discontinued, we still have a good supply. We love the halter style, and you probably know a girl who would be thrilled to wear it. The black and white polka dot fabric is no longer available, but we have lots of polka dot and print options. Use your creativity or call or e-mail us for suggestions.

We received photos from Kelli Fox of Gates in her beautiful Swiss voile bishop. Gates is a very well rounded girl. If you live in her neighborhood, you shouldn't be surprised to see her wearing a smocked dress (although hopefully not a Swiss voile one!) and racing her battery-powered four-wheeler down the driveway.

Kit Today's blog kit is a real winner. A bishop made from our favorite white flocked dotted Swiss accented with blue Swiss embroidery and blue smocking just can't be beat. This kit includes fabric and trim (for up to a size 4), as well as a smocking plate and DMC. It's an incredible value at $48.00. This one will go quickly, so call or e-mail soon to be sure you don't miss out.

The store will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, and we hope you have a happy, safe Independence Day. Enjoy that BBQ!

We got a much needed rain here in Dyersburg this afternoon and as our bonus, we got to spend a little time without utilities! Not ones to waste any time, we spent the hour planning our sale. If you aren't on our newsletter mailing list, be sure and sign up today by going to the link and filling out the form. After you submit the form, you'll receive an e-mail you MUST respond to in order to activate your status on the newsletter list. Just in case you don't get this done in time to get the newsletter, we will post the sale info on the Snippets page. You won't want to miss this because there are some wonderful discounts. We do need to think about polishing off that summer merchandise to make room for all the new stuff that is on the way. While you are browsing the website, be sure and visit the New Arrivals page because we have updated it with a few of the wonderful fabrics that Fabric Finders sent us just last week.

We have room for a few more people in Beverley Sheldrick's August workshop so if you are interested, call us today. Beverley can honor color scheme requests, but she needs those requests right away. Her kits are absolutely "to die for" and she is a delightful instructor that we are looking forward to having with us as the summer winds down.

I've been corresponding with Gail Doane to get those '08 dates for everyone who couldn't get into the November workshop. We've about decided on either the weekend of Jan. 19 or Jan. 26. Gail will make the final call but pencil those dates in if you are interested because Gail's classes fill with record speed. The dates we are looking at for Lillie McAnge to return are toward the end of April. Easter is in late March next year and I'm betting you'll need every available minute in March to get your Easter sewing finished. Claudia Newton's dates for '08 are firm, however. We've booked June 12-14 for a workshop on whitework and drawnwork, for which she's made beautiful projects.

Kit We have a couple of great buys for our blog special kits today. The first one is for a baby boy that needs a cool and handsome diaper shirt to sport in this hot weather. We chose blue embroidered dots on white dotted swiss for a shirt lined in white Verona lawn and adorned with blue dyed baby pearl buttons and white picot trim. This value packed shirt kit sells for $18 with the add-ons being Collars, Etc. Layette pattern and white thread, if you need it. We didn't include white thread with the kit price because most of you keep white thread on hand.

Kit The second blog special kit features the last 2 blue heart porcelain buttons that we have in stock. The perfect pattern to show off those buttons is Lyn Weeks' Frannie. The yellow/blue pima cotton shirting would be adorable in either the smocked or unsmocked version with a white pique collar and blue piping. This precious kit sells for $30 and includes both fabrics, all buttons, piping, and goes up to size 4. The add-on pattern is one you'd use again and again.

As said by one of the news magazine programs.....We'll be in touch, so you be in touch! And we'll plan to be in touch later this week.

We had a visit today from Carol's grandchildren Houston and Baleigh. Sweet little Baleigh agreed to pose for some photos. The green shoulder-button bishop was her Easter dress this year, and the tiered Miranda sundress is a store sample that just had to be Baleigh's because it went with her pink cowboy boots. Click on the kit page for kits of both of these garments.

Baleigh also modeled our new Madras Lillian shift dress. The blue patchwork dress was an experiment to see if we could make our own Madras patchwork fabric. We like the way it turned it out so much that we are offering the fabric for sale in 1 yard pieces for $25.00 per yard. It is available in blue as shown or pink pastel. We can also make it with multicolored bright fabrics. Call or e-mail for details.

We have received lots of new fabric this week and have worked up lots of ideas for you. Chocolate brown is still a popular color for fall, and we have many fabrics to choose from. Check out the new arrivals page and prepare to be inspired.

It seems like this is the month that everyone is on vacation. We hope you enjoy your summer and can get back to sewing soon. School will start back here in a little over a month, so we will be busy planning fall outfits. The new Creative Needle will be here soon, and we know for a fact that there's lots in it to inspire you.

For a blog kit today, we thought you might like something patriotic for July 4th. Pammy's Playclothes is an easy pattern that works up quickly. The tri-color check looks good with both red and cobalt blue pique, and the Uncle Sam Star smocked on a white insert will make her want to lead the July 4th parade. The kit for up to size 8 includes check fabric for top and shorts ruffles, pique for shorts (you choose the color), pre-pleated insert, plate and floss. The price is $38.00, and the pattern is $11.00. Call or e-mail to order this one and have it made in time for the picnic.

It's starting to feel like summer here-temperatures in the mid 90's and high humidity. Today's blog kits remind us of a summer garden. They're also both quick and easy to make. The first one uses buttons and baby rickrack to create a "pinwheel in the garden" look on cool-as-a-cucumber seersucker stripe. The little snail buttons adds just a touch of whimsy. We like Primrose Lane's Chrissy pattern for this outfit. The kit, which includes fabric, buttons and rickrack to make up to a size 6, is $24.50, and the pattern is $11.00

The next kit starts with a favorite summer pattern, Hanna's Sundress by Collars, Etc. We like the casual version with a white yoke, floral skirt, eyelet ruffles and perky pink grosgrain bows under the arms. If you like, you can add a touch of embroidery on the yoke. The $49.50 kit, which fits up to size 8, includes fabrics, ribbon, eyelet, thread, buttons and DMC floss for embroidery. The pattern is $12.00.

This is my friend Heather Young with her girls Katharine and Hannah. Katharine was a flower girl in a wedding last weekend, and Heather wanted to learn to smock and make her dress. She picked an ambitious project, and she's left handed, but she caught on quickly and really needed very little help from me. Not only did she finish Katharine's dress in time for the wedding, but she had time to make one for little sister Hannah too. I'm very proud of her first effort. She's got the "bug" now, and I'm sure this won't be her last project, especially with a new baby brother due to arrive in October.

Kelli Fox sent a photo of Gates in her new dress (and matching shoes!). I don't know how Kelli gets everything done, but she makes it look so easy.

We are all thinking about Cissie Wellons and her family this week. Cissie's daughter is going through a difficult time, and she is very much in our thoughts and prayers. My husband Ronnie is doing well after surgery for a herniated disc, and I'm glad to be back at work.

Have a great day.

Claudia Newton’s school this weekend was amazing! We had a great group of ladies, and everyone had a wonderful time. All of us agree that Claudia’s projects are fabulous, and she is such a patient, well-organized instructor. Claudia is already making plans for a return visit in 2008.

We have been told that BBQ was a hot topic on Delphi lately so we decided to serve some of the mid-south’s finest to our school attendees last week. Our featured BBQ chef was Ricky Horner, owner of Pig N Out in Dyersburg. We had pulled pork, slaw, potato salad, and baked beans. I do realize that every region has its own opinion about what makes for wonderful BBQ but I still contend that it is near impossible to prepare this delicacy at home. My preference is cooked on a pit or a BBQ cooker over charcoal at 225 degrees for 8-10 hours. Cathy Hall brought one of those wonderful caramel cakes from the Mennonite Bakery in Meridian, MS and we also had on hand a homemade pecan pie. We’ll all be dieting until the 4th of July!

Our next workshop will be with Beverley Sheldrick in August. Beverley’s project will be her exquisite Embroiderer’s Hussif. The class is filling up quickly, so don’t miss this opportunity to take a class with one of New Zealand’s favorite silk ribbon embroidery teachers. In November, Gail Doane will return to Carol Harris Company. Gail’s class is full, and there is a waiting list; but we are fairly certain that she will be able to teach another workshop for us in early 2008. Stay tuned for more details.

Our friend Sarah Minton is truly multi talented. She sent photos of her garden in Yarmouth, Maine, in full bloom after a spring rain. Sarah’s garden has been featured in Better Homes and Garden, and she has lectured here on Japanese gardening. Sarah is also a former violin teacher and once owned a knitting shop. Now her passion is sewing, and we’re so glad.

Have a look at Lynn’s adorable niece, Kate, wearing her new dress. Aunt Lynn got the idea for this special creation from an old AS&E and thought it would be great for Kate’s June birthday. Kate was 7 years old on Thursday, the 7th. This is our “blog special” kit for the week. We are offering the kit in size 3-7 for $70.

We’ll be posting another blog later this week. In the meantime, please remember to say a prayer for Dana, whose husband had surgery yesterday. We wish Ronnie Branch a speedy recovery and hope Dana will be able to join us again very soon. On a very happy note, however, Dana’s daughter, Carrie Beth, received a scholarship towards the career path in nursing, which she has chosen. Congratulations, Carrie!

We hope you had a very happy Memorial Day holiday. Carol enjoyed her weekend in Charleston, South Carolina. The weather here has been gorgeous, and we finally got some much-needed rain.

Ella Sandra Humphreys sent a photo of her granddaughter, Ella Jane, in her new Miranda dress made from our Novelty coordinates FF322 and FF323. Sandra is a very talented seamstress, and it's obvious that Ella enjoys wearing Sandra's creations.

Kristie Gill also sent photos of her latest projects. The first one is her daughter Elizabeth's pre-K graduation dress. Elizabeth is a beautiful little girl who looks very happy about her pink poodle dress. Kristie's second project is a very elegant Madeira appliqué ring bearer's pillow for her sister's wedding.

Instead of a blog kit today we have a special offer for you... 30% off on selected kits from our Kit page! The discounted Kits are Flutterby, Lettie, Selena, Sand Pails, Shell Seeker and Happiness. All these kits are fun, easy to sew garments that can be whipped up in no time. To receive the discount you must call to place your order. This offer is valid only for phone orders and only while supplies last.

We're excited about Claudia Newton's workshop this week. This will be Claudia's first time to teach for us, and we are anxious to meet her and see all the pretty things she'll bring to show us. Don't forget that we also have workshops scheduled with Beverley Sheldrick and Gail Doane. These classes are filling up fast, so don't delay if you think you want to attend one of them. You may call or e-mail us for more information.

Remember to keep sending us photos and comments.

Have a great day!

Pirate Have you seen all the new kits on the Kits page? My favorite is the little boy's outfit smocked with a pirate bear and pirate ship. I wish that one had been around when my little boy was still wearing smocked clothes. He was absolutely fascinated with pirates, and wanted to be a pirate when he grew up (see update below). I miss my little buccaneer. Also, pirates are everywhere nowadays thanks to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. You'll be right on top of the latest trend.

Aloha Liberty Floral Pique We don't have a blog kit today (I can't find the camera!?!) so we'll just toss an idea or two at you. This new flower print Pique is very cute and so summer-y. This would make a great Children's Corner Frannie or a Children's Corner Abbie top with any of the colors used for solid pants. We have solid blue, green, pink and lavender pique. Or how about this Aloha Liberty? It looks really sharp accented with pink micro check. Just a few of the Children's Corner patterns that come to mind for this one are Babs, Kinsey, Paulie and Madeline. Call or e-mail us and we'll work up a kit for you.

We've started an advance list for the new Mary Jane pattern from Collars, Etc. The pattern was featured in the latest Creative Needle. If you want to be one of the first to receive this fantastic new pattern, call or e-mail, and we'll add you to the list. As soon as we get it in, we'll send you your copy.

Private Ronald Branch We hope you have a very happy Memorial Day weekend. I'm thankful for all our service men and women, and especially this one-PFC Ronald Redmond Branch, my son. Ronnie is a member of the Army Reserve. He's the third generation of our family to serve in the military. His grandfather, Harvey Moore Dunavant, served in the Navy in World War II, and his uncle, Ronnie Dunavant, served in the Army during the Vietnam war. I'm very proud of all our military personnel and truly grateful for all the ones who gave their lives for our freedom.

Have a great day.

Today we are using some of our vintage trims for the blog kits. This means that supplies of these kits will be very limited.

Swiss Dot Kit The first kit uses vintage yellow trim with our yellow on white dotted Swiss. We could see this made several ways-As a sleeveless smocked from the shoulder dress with the trim at the bottom; as a tuck dress with the trim running vertically down the center front; or as a Children's Corner Louise jumper with the trim at the hem. Any of these ideas would be perfect for a summer wedding or any special occasion you have planned this summer. Since we've given you several pattern choices, call us for a price on this kit.

Kit The next kit uses vintage black and ecru French trim. Little boys will love the fishing scene on the trim. Wouldn't this be adorable on a Children's Corner Michael with a square collar trimmed in the lace and these tiny black buttons! We suggest the ecru Sea Island French Oxford for the top and pants. The $65.00 kit will fit up to a size 3 and will include fabric, trim, buttons and thread. The pattern is available separately.

Ann Albro sent photos of her three precious daughters in their blue Easter dresses. Ann is really enjoying sewing for her three girls.

If you live in Tennessee and are a reader of Southern Living magazine, be sure to check out the article on Carol Harris Company in the Tennessee Living section of the June 2007 issue. I'm not sure, but I think this is only featured in magazines mailed to or sold in Tennessee.

Keep sending us those photos. We look forward to hearing from you.

New patterns arrived today from Ginger Snaps Designs. The new Mary Hayden's Blouse pattern is a good basic pattern to add to your library, and the classic Ginger's Basic Yoke Dress has long been a favorite of ours. We like the Ginger Snaps patterns because they have several sizes in one envelope (a good value!) and because the directions are very clear and concise.

If you noticed Bear Threads' advertisement in the latest Creative Needle, you know that they will soon make available a newly acquired collection of vintage ribbons and trimmings. Carol will have the honor of being the first one to view these next week when she visits their showroom in Atlanta. We can't wait to see what treasures she brings back--we'll keep you posted.

Also in the new Creative Needle, Carol's youngest granddaughter Baleigh is the precious model in our advertisement. She will be four in a few days. You can also see her photos at the top of the home page on our website.

Vintage Collection Speaking of vintage collections, we have recently acquired the collection of a local seamstress who is also a former shop owner. While not technically "vintage", it does include lots of pieces that are no longer available. Look for these to crop up sporadically on the blog and in our blog kits.

Virginia Today's first Blog Kit is perfect for almost any summer occasion. Children's Corner Virginia is the pattern we suggest for this lovely blue butterfly and flower printed pique. We like the sleeveless version with blue gingham ruffles at the neck and down the front. The kit will include pique and gingham fabrics and gingham covered buttons. The size 1-4 kit is $40.00, and the size 5-8 kit is $50.00. The pattern is available separately.

Lydia For a more casual summer dress, how about our old favorite Lydia smocked with a funky purse. Any one of the purses on Frances Messina Jones' "Pocketful of Purses" would look adorable on the Lydia swing jumper made from hot pink tiny microcheck. This kit includes fabric, plate, DMC and buttons and will fit up to size 24 months. It's a steal at $20.00!

Pastel Print Lawn Finally, this beautiful pastel print lawn has been one of our best sellers. There's just enough left for a sweet angel-sleeve bishop. You can snatch this kit up for just $25.00 and have enough fabric, floss and sleeve trim for up to a size 3 dress. Call today to order one of these blog kits.

We're constantly thinking of new things to share with you on this blog. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, we'd love to hear from you. Don't forget to keep sending us photos, too.

Have a great day!

Monday, May 14, 2007
We hope you all had a happy Mother's Day. You still have a little time left to get the special blog discounts. Please refer to the May 9, 2007, blog for all the details.

Baby Gift Kit Do you need a special baby gift in a hurry? Today's blog kits are just the thing. A diaper shirt and diaper cover or a daygown is so easy to finish using our Lollipops. Add a touch of embroidery, and it's ready to give to your favorite new mommy. We'll send you a kit with enough white Pima lawn to complete either the daygown or the diaper shirt and cover along with your choice of a pink, blue or yellow gingham Lollipop for $28.00. If you want, you can add tiny colored mother of pearl buttons. Use your favorite pattern or purchase one that we suggest here. We like the Baby's Diaper Shirt I, Baby Diaper Covers, and Baby Daygowns Book II, all by Gingersnaps Designs If you're not familiar with Lollipops, they are pre-packaged lengths of double-fold ¼" bias that can be used to finish necklines, sleeves, hems-anywhere you would use a bias binding. They are available in several fabric and color choices.

Sorry today's blog is so short. The end of the day got unexpectedly busy today. We'll be posting some new kits this week, so keep checking back often. Also, don't forget that our Claudia Newton and Beverley Sheldrick schools are filling up. Don't miss out!

Have a great day.
